A couch is a gathering spot for friends and family, and over time, it can accumulate quite a bit of dirt and grime. While you can certainly dust and vacuum the couch, you will only remove the residual accumulation of dirt. It’s also important to remove the crumbs, food stains, and pet hair that find their way into the crevices of your couch.
One way you can do this is by deep cleaning your upholstered couch. To do this task successfully, it’s best to review the three stages of cleaning: pre-cleaning, dry cleaning, and wet cleaning.
Pre-cleaning: This stage resembles touch-up cleaning that you’d do if you were doing a quick clean. If you have pets, use a lint brush to remove any pet fur. Vacuum the couch with the hose and upholstery tool. Lift and remove cushions, and vacuum the crevices with the crevice tool.
Dry cleaning: You might mistakenly believe that dry cleaning your couch involves sending it to a facility that uses a water-free chemical solution to clean fabric. In this instance, it actually references using dry powders to absorb odors and stains. Use baking soda or an upholstery cleaning powder and shake the powder over the couch via a mesh strainer. Evenly coat every surface. Use a cleaning brush to gently work the powder into the couch. Wait 20 to 30 minutes and vacuum the couch.
Wet cleaning: This stage is best for liquid stains on the couch. However, you want to wet clean the entire couch — cleaning only the section that has the stain will create a noticeable ring. Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water, a few drops of dish soap, and a quarter cup of vinegar. Lightly spray the surface of the couch, and use a cleaning brush to massage the cleaning solution into the fabric. Use an upholstery cleaning machine and its suction hose to suck up the moisture. Once the fabric is completely dry, vacuum to soften the fibers.
Couches are a staple in most households, so it’s important to keep them looking and smelling clean. Consider giving your couch a thorough cleaning at least twice a year, and you’ll bask in the fresh scent while relaxing after completing this task.
