Most people spend a lot of time indoors during the winter and especially after the holidays. While it’s tempting to want to curl up under a blanket and read or watch movies, winter is actually a good time to get some home improvement projects done. Not only will sprucing up your home make you feel good but, if you plan on listing your house in the spring or summer, the house is ready to go. Here are a few projects that are easy to DIY.
Seal cracks. Look and feel for escaping air around doors and windows and then either caulk or add weatherstripping to seal up the leaks.
Add insulation. Check the R-value of your existing insulation and if it’s R-30 or lower, replace it with a higher rated R-value and make sure there is sufficient amounts to fill in all the gaps in the attic.
Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When the time change occurs in March and November, replace the batteries in these life-saving alarms.
Refresh cabinet faces. Painting or staining existing cabinets can give your house a fabulous facelift. Generally, paints and stains are cheaper in the winter than in the summer, so you can save money by refreshing them in the winter. Also, upgrade the hardware to modernize the look of the cabinets.
Clean the garage. Winter is a great time to clean out the garage. Get rid of stuff you aren’t going to use, organize things in storage containers, dust the cobwebs away, and paint the concrete floor.
Replace the light bulbs. LED lights use substantially less energy than incandescent ones, so replace your older bulbs with energy-saving ones.
Enjoy freshening up the house and property this winter with these easy DIY projects.
